Liverpool head coach Gareth Taylor says that the club must look at the broader picture as they go into an important double-header against Aston Villa and West Ham United.

The Reds are currently bottom of the Barclays Women’s Super League table and are still seeking their first win of the season. They go to Aston Villa this evening before travelling to face West Ham United in Dagenham on Sunday.

Liverpool need points to climb the table before Christmas but head coach Taylor is keen to stay focused on the broader picture.

“Everything is crucial, everything you do,” Taylor said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “It’s just about keeping a broader outlook on where we are, where we are at. If it’s not six points which would be incredible, I’ve always been about if you can’t win a game, try not to lose it. We’ve been getting closer recently drawing with Chelsea and Brighton then nearly drawing with Arsenal at the weekend.

“Whatever the situation, whatever the results, we will deal with it in a pragmatic and sensible way.”

Liverpool’s next opponents Aston Villa are known for their attacking football and have impressed so far this season. Taylor admits that the timing of the game isn’t ideal given his own side’s injuries but The Reds will battle on.

He said “They make it tough. They’ve changed under their new coach; they really like to be on the front-foot, they really like to be aggressive with their pressing, they’ve got pace in the team, they like to play on the counter-attack really quickly and they’ve got players that can hurt you.

“It’s not an easy time [to play] them, particularly with the experienced first team players that we have missing. It’s not an ideal time but it’s where the game has been put, so we attack it. We recognise the weaknesses in their team and the potential areas where we can exploit.”

Aston Villa boast plenty of attacking pace and power, particularly in the wide areas. While The Villans are dangerous, Taylor sees resulting frailties in the back-line.

He said “I think it’s always about playing in the spaces, particularly when we have the ball. We know that they want to be aggressive but teams that want to be aggressive usually leave something that they can’t cover. We need to be aware of that.”

Liverpool’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Aston Villa kicks-off at 7pm.
