Having embarked on an unprecedented summer which saw the club smash the British transfer record twice on Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak in the same window, much was expected of Liverpool this season.

However, the Dutchman’s second season at the helm continues to go from bad to worse and Wednesday’s 4-1 humiliation against PSV Eindhoven was a ninth defeat in Liverpool’s last 12 matches across all competitions.

Out of the Carabao Cup, sitting 12th and 13th in the Premier League and Champions League respectively, officially it is the Merseyside giants’ worst run for 71 years.

The Reds appeared to be back on track after losing six in seven by recording wins over Aston Villa and Real Madrid prior to the November international break.

Though, those results have proven to be a false dawn following successive three-goal margin defeats at the hands of Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and PSV.

Virgil van Dijk could not hide his dejection after defeat to PSV

Just six months on from guiding Liverpool to Premier League glory, Slot is having to answer questions about his future.

“I don’t think it’s important if it is fair or not,” he said after the PSV loss. “But that it’s normal, that I understand.

“If any manager around the world loses football games, let alone as many as we have lost, it’s quite normal that people have an opinion about that and if that is fair or not fair, that’s for other people to judge.

“But that it’s normal, I think it is that if you lose so many times that people start talking about that.

“But no, I am not worried – what I mean with that is that my focus is on other things than worrying about my own position. I try to analyse [and] try to help the players as much as I can, and it is obvious that I don’t do it in the way that I did it last season because when you talk about individual errors, I think that is also something that comes from a team effort.

“So, again, I need to do better and that is what I am trying to do every single day, to improve the team, and that is where my main focus is, to be honest.”

Arne Slot is under pressure to turn Liverpool’s form around

Liverpool are back in action on Sunday as they face an improving West Ham side at the London Stadium. Then it’s back-to-back games against Sunderland and Leeds before a trip to Milan to face Inter in the Champions League.

Amid continued speculation regarding Slot’s future, former Reds defender Jamie Carragher has insisted Liverpool are not a sacking club.

According to Mail Sport, that stance has been emphasized.

A report reads: “Arne Slot retains the backing of the Liverpool hierarchy despite knowing he is under pressure to turn around their wretched run of form.

“Sources close to both Liverpool and Slot himself have insisted that his position as head coach is safe and that has not changed after the defeat to PSV.”
