Liverpool are facing big changes to their midfield sector this summer.

New faces could be arriving with Adam Wharton, Lamine Camara and Mamadou Sangare just a few of the names linked.

The outgoing Premier League champions have been relying on the same midfield options for a couple of seasons now and it’s clear that a change is required.

Alexis Mac Allister could be on the way out of the door given his contract expires in 2028 and no agreement is on the horizon for a new deal.

Curtis Jones meanwhile is closer to Inter Milan as his current terms expire in 2027 and the club have been so far unsuccessful in getting him to sign a new contract.

And others including players on the fringes also face an exit.

Luca Stephenson linked with the exit door

One tipped to leave over the last few weeks has been Luca Stephenson. The 22-year-old has been out on loan at Dundee United for the last couple of seasons - impressing at Tannadice across two separate spells.

His 2025/26 campaign was curtailed due to a hamstring injury but he is expected to be fit for preseason in July.

Bolton Wanderers were recently named as strong suitors for the tireless midfielder - who can also play right-back and right wing-back.

Stephenson would leave for first-team football

This summer represents a crossroads for Stephenson who is determined to secure regular first-team football for next season.

He told the Athletic that he would welcome the opportunity to play regularly for Liverpool but accepts the prospect of moving away at this stage of his career.

“It’s going to be an important summer for me,” he is reported to have said.

“If I’m around, I’ll be looking to get on that pre-season tour, hopefully get some minutes, and impress.

"I’m at the age now where I need to be playing first-team football, like I have done for the past couple of seasons. If that’s at Liverpool, fantastic. If it’s not, I’ll find a new adventure, like the other boys who have left and done really well.”

Stephenson took his opportunity to impress Arne Slot in preseason on the past couple of occasions - leading to his new deal.

But now he may have to follow in the footsteps of Tyler Morton and others - and strike out alone in search of first-team football on his own terms.
