Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has named Jack Grealish as the biggest wind-up merchant he has faced during his time playing in the Premier League.
Mac Allister has faced off against Manchester City’s record signing since his days at Brighton and Hove Albion, when Grealish was still in Aston Villa colours and was given the armband for his boyhood club after leading them to promotion from the EFL Championship.
Grealish took time to adapt to life under Pep Guardiola – as has been the case with a majority of the Catalan’s signings at the Etihad Stadium – but the England international was one of Manchester City’s most important players en route to a historic treble in the 2022-23 season.
The England international has faced a difficult 24 months in the north-west and that has fuelled speculation over his long-term future under Guardiola, who has given the Birmingham-born forward his blessing to search for a new club this summer.
Grealish is set to be excluded from Manchester City’s squad for their upcoming Club World Cup campaign as the attacker’s representatives actively search for a new club after another difficult season that saw the club’s record signing struggle for fitness and minutes.
Manchester City are ready to sanction a permanent sale for Grealish for a cut-price figure of £40 million – which would represent a £60 million loss against the staggering £100 million release clause the club activated to secure the Englishman’s services from Aston Villa four years ago.
Grealish is keen to stay in the Premier League and prefers a permanent move to find a new home but remains open to a loan, which Manchester City will help facilitate as the winger remains a popular figure behind the scenes at the Etihad Stadium.
Guardiola has evidently lost his faith in Grealish when it came to Manchester City’s biggest games of the recent season and there is a wider acceptance that Guardiola’s most expensive signing of all time needs a fresh start to revitalise his England career, having been overlooked by Thomas Tuchel in his first two squad selections since being appointed Three Lions boss.
In an interview this week, Liverpool and Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister was asked to name the most provocative opponent he has faced during his time playing in England, having moved to the Premier League when Brighton signed the 26-year-old from Argentinos Jrs. in 2019.
“(Jack) Grealish – you feel like kicking him,” the Argentine said, as quoted by Mirror Sport. “But even when you do, he gets right back up. And somehow, that makes you feel like you’re winning.”
Guardiola has left the door open for Grealish to stay put if he wants to challenge for minutes at the Etihad Stadium but with the forward not part of Manchester City’s Club World Cup squad, the wind is heading in one direction and all signs point to a parting of ways.
It’ll be a sad ending for a player loved by a large section of the club’s fanbase and who etched his name in the club’s history books with a contribution to City’s treble that will forever be remembered.
