Liverpool must move for La Liga forward this summer – Opinion

Liverpool’s rebuild cannot stop at one forward addition this summer.
If there is even the slightest opportunity to tempt Julián Álvarez away from Atlético Madrid, then Liverpool must explore it aggressively because the Argentine attacker remains one of the most complete and intelligent forwards in world football.
With Hugo Ekitiké now reportedly sidelined until 2027 through injury, the market changes dramatically. Liverpool cannot afford to enter another season relying on one elite centre-forward while expecting the same stale, predictable attacking structures to improve naturally.
The Reds need variety. They need movement. They need aggression and flexibility in the final third. And Álvarez would immediately provide all of that.
Ever since leaving Manchester City, Álvarez has shown exactly why so many elite clubs admired him long before his move to England. His energy levels are relentless, his pressing is intelligent, and technically he operates at a world-class level whether playing as a central striker, second forward, or roaming attacking presence.
Alongside Alexander Isak, Liverpool could suddenly become terrifying again.
Rather than relying upon static buildup and isolated attacking moments, the Reds could finally return to playing with chaos, speed, and unpredictability. Isak offers elegance, movement, and finishing quality, while Álvarez brings ferocity, work rate, and constant disruption to defensive structures.
The two together could become a nightmare pairing.
Álvarez operating just behind or alongside Isak would allow Liverpool to attack with genuine fluidity again. One drops deep, one runs beyond. One presses the first line aggressively while the other attacks space in transition. It would feel far closer to the intense and devastating Liverpool sides that supporters became accustomed to under Jürgen Klopp.
And importantly, it would maximise the talents around them too.
Florian Wirtz operating from the left side as the primary creator would suddenly have intelligent runners constantly attacking the spaces he creates. Meanwhile, if Liverpool could add a powerful right-sided option such as Yan Diomande, the entire balance of the side begins to look more dynamic, athletic, and structurally complete.
Liverpool has lacked power and tempo all season.
This type of rebuild changes that immediately.
Truthfully, I believed Álvarez should have been the priority signing last summer even ahead of Isak.
Not because Isak lacks quality — far from it — but because Álvarez possesses that unique blend of technical brilliance, tactical intelligence, pressing intensity, and warrior mentality that fits Liverpool perfectly. He feels built for Anfield. Built for chaos. Built for elite-level football where forwards must contribute in every phase of the game.
This summer, Liverpool cannot afford timid decision-making.
The squad needs refreshing.
The midfield needs greater athleticism and structure.
The forward line needs rebuilding around movement and aggression rather than slow and disconnected patterns of play.
And above all else, Liverpool needs a new coaching direction capable of unleashing that talent properly.
Because this current tactical approach has drained life from too many elite footballers.
A new head coach alongside elite attacking additions such as Álvarez could completely reignite the club. Suddenly supporters would feel optimism again. Suddenly the team would resemble a modern European heavyweight rather than a group sleepwalking through matches waiting for moments of individual brilliance to rescue them.
If the opportunity exists, Liverpool should move.
Because players like Julián Álvarez do not become available often.
And if Liverpool truly wants to return to the elite level where it belongs, this is exactly the type of signing that changes everything.
