Liverpool have got to change their plans if Fabrizio Romano's bombshell proves accurate.
Liverpool could be on the brink of losing another star, it seems. Fabrizio Romano has thrown fuel on the fire, claiming there's growing interest in Alexis Mac Allister.
Now, Romano is very careful not to say that Mac Allister is definitely off. Instead, he's making it clear that clubs feel there's an opportunity to sign him.
"I wanted to mention another name, because there are some clubs starting to look at the situation of Alexis Mac Allister at Liverpool," said Romano on YouTube.
"Mac Allister's situation could be interesting this summer. In case of good proposals for Liverpool, for the player, I will not exclude changes in midfield for Liverpool.
"This obviously doesn't mean that McAllister is 100 percent leaving. This doesn't mean that McAllister is out of the Liverpool project. I'm not saying this. I'm saying that in case of a good proposal for the club and for the player, the situation of McAllister could eventually develop during the summer transfer win."
It's an interesting one. Mac Allister is notably not in contract talks with Liverpool while Dominik Szoboszlai reportedly is. Ryan Gravenberch, the other of the three midfielders signed in 2023, got a new contract back in March.
And if there's any chance that the Argentine may leave, Liverpool have to completely rethink their strategy with Curtis Jones. The Scouser is heavily linked with a move away this summer as Inter prepare to push hard over a deal.
That cannot happen. Losing both Jones and Mac Allister would be a disaster and the former is the more valuable asset here - a player who doesn't actually want to leave, envisions a long-term career with the Reds, and is younger.
So u-turn on any plans to sell Jones. He needs to stay at the club - and especially so if Mac Allister has any chance of leaving.
Liverpool Campaign and Stats
As of 11 June 2026, Alexis Mac Allister remains a Liverpool player. The 27-year-old Argentine midfielder endured a challenging 2025/26 campaign, which saw him struggle for form and athleticism compared to his debut season at Anfield. Following a fifth-place finish for the Reds, his long-term future has become a subject of significant media speculation. Reports indicate that Liverpool’s new football hierarchy is currently open to a potential sale of the midfielder this summer as part of a wider squad overhaul, with the proceeds potentially being reallocated to target more dynamic reinforcements in the engine room.
International Duty and Contract Status
Mac Allister is currently on international duty with Argentina, having been named in their 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He recently featured in a 3–0 friendly victory against Iceland on 10 June, playing 45 minutes. His current contract at Liverpool is set to expire in 2028, though ongoing contract extension negotiations have reportedly stalled. While he has been linked with potential moves to elite European clubs, his father and agent, Carlos Mac Allister, has publicly dismissed claims of any formal discussions taking place regarding a departure.
