Liverpool have beaten Newcastle at Anfield in convincing fashion, extending their lead at the top to 13 points following Arsenal’s scoreless draw against Nottingham Forest. Things are looking positive for the Reds, as they’ve now earned a week off ahead of their Champions League match against PSG. Liverpool can take pride in their dominant display, restricting Newcastle to an xG of just 0.21 and preventing them from registering a single shot on target. Liverpool controlled the game in multiple areas of the pitch today, but it’s only right to begin with the backline.

As the stats above show, Liverpool’s backline handled everything that came their way, leaving Alisson Becker with little to nothing to do. The backline has plenty to be proud of, as they’ve now registered two clean sheets in a row in the Premier League. Today, however, was an improved defensive performance from Liverpool’s fullbacks, keeping the likes of Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy quiet. Pair this with yet another masterclass from Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté, and you have a truly outstanding defensive display. Following a few shaky defensive performances, Liverpool fans will now feel less anxious after watching today’s match in particular. A defensive masterclass is also easier to achieve with the likes of Luis Díaz tracking back brilliantly to support his teammates. However, a rock-solid defensive display isn’t enough to beat a team of Newcastle’s calibre.

Is Alexander Isak the answer to Liverpool’s No.9 problem?

Liverpool’s forwards impressed, with Mohamed Salah and Luis Díaz both providing assists for the goalscorers. However, the goals came from two midfielders. Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai seem to be doing absolutely everything to help their team thrive — whether it’s scoring, tackling, ball-carrying, or creating chances. These two, along with Ryan Gravenberch, deserve immense credit in a season where Liverpool’s midfield has reached an entirely new level. Szoboszlai’s form has been brilliant, with the Hungarian scoring for two games in a row for the first time in his Liverpool career — a stat that will only boost his confidence further. Jurgen Klopp deserves credit for this midfield rebuild, having brought in these three superstars along with Wataru Endo in a single summer. Endo has been a crucial player in closing out games for Liverpool — a model professional and a dependable footballer.
