Big changes are coming to the centre of Liverpool’s defence.

The Reds may well end up losing Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer - unless a new contract can be worked out very quickly.

Fellow senior defender Joe Gomez meanwhile cast doubt on his future earlier this week - revealing that he too may leave Anfield this summer.

Given Virgil van Dijk is out of contract in 2027 fans can be forgiven for being a little worried about the experience levels in the heart of defence.

The club have taken steps to safeguard the future of the defence through the signings of Giovanni Leoni, Jeremy Jacquet, Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe.

But there remains the possibility of Richard Hughes landing a senior defender in the upcoming window.

Marcos Senesi exit confirmed

And as a result of events on Friday one dream signing moved even closer.

Marcos Senesi was a star for Arne Slot’s Feyenoord team - reaching the UEFA Conference League final back in 2022.

The Argentina international then moved to Richard Hughes’ Bournemouth - where he has established himself as one of the best-regarded passers in the Premier League.

The club announced that the 28-year-old would be moving on at the end of his contract - with no shortage of interest in the left-footer’s services.

While it’s been claimed Tottenham have reached an agreement to sign Senesi their participation in the top flight for next season is far from guaranteed.

And a new report in Sports Boom is now claiming that Liverpool will push hard for Senesi’s signature following his refusal to discuss a new Bournemouth contract.

Liverpool pushing hard for Senesi deal

“Liverpool are understood to be pushing hard behind the scenes as uncertainty continues to surround Ibrahima Konaté," the report reads.

“The France international is approaching the end of his own contract and, despite talks over a renewal, no breakthrough has yet been reached.

“Senesi is viewed as an ideal replacement at Anfield thanks to his Premier League experience, left footed balance and calmness in possession.

“The Reds also know him well through former Bournemouth recruitment chief Richard Hughes, now working at Liverpool, who originally helped bring the Argentine to England.”

Liverpool will now have to hold off interest from Newcastle - but given their inferior position and lack of European football Anfield is a far more attractive option.

This season Senesi has bounced back as one of the top defenders in the league. Last term he was injured and lost his place as Illia Zabarnyi and Dean Huijsen struck up a partnership.

Both left last summer - leaving Senesi back in control of Andoni Iraola’s defence. The Cherries are enjoying a fine season - currently sixth - and are right in the mix for European football.
