Liverpool are set to begin their Champions League campaign on Wednesday night at Anfield, a contest that brings both excitement and a degree of tension. Arne Slot’s side sit proudly at the top of the Premier League with four wins from four, yet their path has been anything but straightforward. Each victory has been secured by late winners, a pattern that thrills supporters but cannot be relied upon indefinitely.
If there is one team unlikely to allow such narrow margins, it is Atletico Madrid. The Spanish side arrive as Liverpool’s first European opponents of the season, and despite suffering their own injury concerns, they remain formidable. The atmosphere under the lights at Anfield always feels different, but this fixture carries added weight as Slot seeks to extend his strong start in both domestic and European competition.

The build-up has been marked by positive news on the fitness front. New signing Alexander Isak was spotted in open training on Tuesday, with journalist James Pearce confirming that the Swedish striker is in line for involvement. Supporters are eager to see how he adapts to the intensity of Anfield, and there is every chance that Wednesday could mark his first appearance in red.
Equally significant is the return of Alexis Mac Allister, who trained fully after picking up a knock against Burnley. His availability offers Slot an extra layer of midfield control, especially against opponents who thrive on disrupting rhythm. Slot has been keen to stress the importance of squad depth, and with Mac Allister back, the balance of his side improves considerably.
One player absent from preparations is Curtis Jones. The midfielder has been out since the international break with a muscle injury, having travelled with England but failing to feature. Andy Robertson once described him as “excellent”, yet for now Liverpool must cope without his dynamism in the middle of the park. His return date remains uncertain, and his absence underlines how quickly fortunes can shift in a demanding season.
Slot is fortunate that alternatives are emerging. Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong have both returned to fitness, which allows Dominik Szoboszlai to be deployed centrally if required. Szoboszlai’s ability to press and drive forward has been a standout feature since his arrival, and he looks ready to shoulder greater responsibility.
Liverpool will enter the contest as favourites, not least because of their form and the strength of their options. Yet Atletico Madrid have built a reputation for frustrating even the most fluent attacking sides. For supporters, much of the anticipation will centre on whether Isak is unleashed and how Slot manages his squad on a stage where margins are unforgiving.
