Giovanni Leoni undergoes knee surgery as Reds count cost of hectic start to new season

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker is set to undergo a scan on Thursday, while Hugo Ekitike could be available to face Chelsea this weekend.

Alisson has remained as the Reds’ first-choice option between the posts this season despite the summer arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, but was forced off in the second half of Tuesday’s shock Champions League defeat by Galatasaray in Istanbul after suffering an apparent hamstring injury.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot confirmed after the game that the Brazilian international would not play against Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday, telling reporters: “If my player is on the floor, nine out of 10 times I fear the worst and with the worst I mean that he cannot continue.

“It's never positive if you go off like this. You can be sure he is not playing Saturday.”

The Athletic report that Alisson - omitted from Carlo Ancelotti’s latest Brazil squad for upcoming friendlies against South Korea and Japan named on Wednesday - is expected to undergo a scan on Thursday to determine the extent of his injury and for how long he will be out of action.

Liverpool will hope that Alisson can avoid a significant layoff due to hamstring trouble for the third successive season, with Georgia’s Mamardashvili poised to deputise in a high-profile Premier League debut at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening, likely backed up by fellow summer signing Freddie Woodman.

A relatively injury-free start to the new campaign for Premier League leaders Liverpool has since given way to mounting issues, with Ekitike’s status for the trip to Chelsea also uncertain after he too was forced off in the second half against Galatasaray.

Record signing Alexander Isak was likely in line to start up front this weekend anyway after playing less than 30 minutes off the bench in Istanbul, which was the same case for Mohamed Salah. Alexis Mac Allister was also introduced as a second-half substitute, along with Conor Bradley.

The Daily Mail now report that Liverpool are hopeful that Ekitike avoided serious injury against Galatasaray and that he is hoping to be fit to be involved at Chelsea.

Thumbs-up: Liverpool defender Giovanni Leoni has now undergone surgery on a torn ACL

Federico Chiesa missed out entirely against Galatasaray due to what his manager described as a “little niggle”, while compatriot Giovanni Leoni is a long-term absentee.

The teenage defender - a £26million summer signing from Parma - tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on debut against Southampton in the Carabao Cup last week and Slot expects him to be sidelined for approximately a year.

Leoni has now begun on the long road to recovery after undergoing surgery, posting a picture to his Instagram story from a hospital bed on Wednesday along with the words: “Surgery done. Thanks everyone for the messages. I’ll be back soon.”
