Liverpool have reportedly held talks with Real Madrid to assess the credentials of Xabi Alonso.
Alonso has been named as a potential option for Liverpool, should the club dismiss Arne Slot. The Reds have endured a disappointing defence of the Premier League, with loud boos greeting the head coach during Saturday’s draw with Chelsea. The atmosphere at Anfield has led the club’s board to consider all options, including Alonso.
Alonso has been without a club since his short-lived spell at Real Madrid this season, in which the 44-year-old departed after less than eight months in charge.
The former Liverpool midfielder had been appointed with a reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches, having led Bayer Leverkusen to a maiden German title in 2023/24, without losing a game.
Alonso’s popularity at Liverpool from his playing career has made him an obvious managerial candidate, while Chelsea are also exploring a move for the Spaniard.
According to AS, Liverpool chiefs have contacted Real Madrid for the lowdown on Alonso, following his sudden exit from the Bernabeu in January. Liverpool were keen to clarify the events around his departure, in a bid to solve ‘doubts’ around the coach.
BBC Sport reported at the time that Alonso argued with Kylian Mbappe about tactics prior to him leaving Real Madrid. He also had a disagreement with president Florentino Perez before the decision to part ways was taken.
