Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister was on the losing side as Spain defeated Argentina to clinch the 2026 World Cup title.
The Liverpool star started in midfield but failed to provide the control his side desperately needed in the engine room.
It did not help that Enzo Fernandez picked up a red card, leaving Mac Allister with so much more to do on and off the ball.
The Liverpool man won only five out of 13 ground duels and failed to impose himself on the game. He was dribbled past four times.
The Daily Mail gave him a 4/10 rating and said of his performance: “Shocking first half. Repeatedly found red with stray passes and was lucky to escape yellow for a lunge on Olmo.
“Recovered to put in a decent shift but quality still lacking.”
Mac Allister has suffered a sharp decline in form over the past two seasons despite looking terrific in his early days at Liverpool.
His enthusiasm without the ball far eclipses his invention with it. Unsurprisingly, the Reds are reluctant to hand him a new contract.
The 27-year-old has two years left on his deal with Liverpool. Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai are poised to extend their contracts, but there is nothing on the table for the Argentine.
Mac Allister now faces a huge season at Liverpool. He has the quality to rediscover the levels that made him one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders.
He must use the disappointment of the World Cup final as motivation to refresh mentally, re-energise physically and return to his best from the opening weeks of the campaign.
If his performances continue to drift, Liverpool could decide next summer is the right time to cash in before his contract enters its final year.
