Liverpool vs Newcastle: Predicted Lineup, Team News & Injury Updates for Carabao Cup Final

Selection Dilemmas for Liverpool at Wembley

Liverpool head into the Carabao Cup Final against Newcastle facing key selection challenges, with manager Arne Slot forced to make tough calls, particularly at right-back.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold sidelined after picking up an injury against Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool are also without Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley, leaving a gap in defence. Jarell Quansah and Wataru Endo appear the most likely options to fill the role, though Slot has hinted at more unconventional solutions.

“I think maybe even Curtis can play there,” Slot stated. “And you can also play as a left-footed defender on the right side, which is what Newcastle do at the moment but on the opposite [side].”

Defensive and Goalkeeping Decisions

Liverpool have received a boost with Ibrahima Konaté passed fit after being forced off against PSG. He is expected to partner Virgil van Dijk in central defence, with Andy Robertson completing the backline.

One of the biggest decisions for Slot is in goal. While Alisson Becker has returned, Caoimhin Kelleher has played a key role in Liverpool’s domestic cup campaign. Slot must decide whether to stick with his cup keeper or revert to his first-choice stopper.

Attacking Options and Injury Updates

Up front, Liverpool have further decisions to make. Cody Gakpo made a brief return against PSG but looked short of full match fitness. Diogo Jota, who started that game, will compete with Darwin Núñez for a place in the starting XI. Meanwhile, Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah, and Luis Díaz are expected to feature in attacking roles.

As for Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool are still waiting for clarity on his recovery timeline. Slot confirmed:

“So, Trent is indeed not available. He will not be there at the final. But he is still to be assessed for how long it’s going to take but we do expect him back in the end of the season.”
