Liverpool will look to continue their procession toward the Premier League title when they travel to Fulham on Sunday at 2pm (UK time).
Liverpool (4-3-3): Kelleher; Jones, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Salah, Jota, Diaz.
Liverpool go into this match off the back of a hard-fought 1-0 win over Everton in the Merseyside derby. The Reds were lucky to go into half-time goalless, with Beto having a goal ruled out for offside and hitting the post with a golden one-on-one chance. However, after the break, they asserted their dominance and were good value for Diogo Jota’s 57th-minute winner.
Caoimhin Kelleher filled in for Alisson against Everton, with the Brazilian still sidelined due to concussion protocols. Conor Bradley also wasn’t ready to return, so with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez injured as well, Curtis Jones played at right-back.
Slot is likely to stick with Kelleher again rather than risk Alisson too soon, while he may opt to introduce Bradley from the bench. Alexander-Arnold and Gomez won’t be back for a while yet.
Diogo Jota scored his first club goal since January against Everton and will be itching to lead the line again over the out-of-favour Darwin Nunez, while the midfield trio of Gravenberch, Mac Allister and Szoboszlai really came to life in the second half. With Jones likely to be filling in at right-back, they will continue uncontested.
Antonee Robinson has been the best left-back in the Premier League this season and, beyond mere narrative, the Squawka Score even statistically proves it.
With Liverpool facing an injury crisis at right-back, you’d forgive Arne Slot for worrying about that particular match-up. However, the Dutchman appears to have a plan to turn Fulham’s greatest weapon against them. After all, Robinson won’t be given the freedom to bomb forward as freely as he normally does, with the considerable threat of Mohamed Salah to think about.
“Antonee Robinson is definitely a threat, he is having a great season, [I] saw him vs Arsenal and us,” Slot told reporters.
He continued: “Left full-backs who attack take the risk of leaving Mo Salah where he can hurt the opposition as well, and that has happened multiple times this season. Mo, in transition, can hurt the other team.
“We have to make sure we have to have the good answer for attacking full-backs, especially if they play with five at the back. Everton brought us challenges and Fulham will also do so.”
Rather than letting Robinson — who is second in the league for assists this season (10) — cause him a problem, Slot is passing the headache on to Marco Silva, who must decide just how many risks he wants his buccaneering full-back to take.
