Liverpool will soon be crying out for centre-back reinforcements - following the failure to land Marc Guehi on transfer deadline day.

Right now the Reds have only got three centre-back options at their disposal in the shape of Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez.

There is uncertainty over Konate - who is out of contract in 2026 and right now there is no movement on a renewal. Gomez, meanwhile, could be sold if Richard Hughes decides he can receive a fair price for the Englishman.

Liverpool require centre-back options

Liverpool sold Jarell Quansah over the summer to Bayer Leverkusen for £30m and also lost Giovanni Leoni for the entire season due to an ACL injury suffered on debut.

All those events combined have left the Premier League champions facing a central defensive crisis - with problems being exposed left, right and centre in the Premier League of late.

Now it’s emerged that the club have been doing their homework of late on an England international defender.

Man City and Tottenham want Konsa

Ezri Konsa, 28, has been a mainstay for Aston Villa since joining from Charlton in 2019. The centre-back has racked up close to 250 appearances for the Villans - establishing himself as a Champions League starter and a full international in the process.

Under contract at Villa Park until 2028, Konsa is nonetheless being looked at by the Reds - along with other top teams in the Premier League and further afield.

That’s according to a new report in TBR Football, which mentions Liverpool’s scouting missions but also concedes that Tottenham and Manchester City are also involved in the process.

Liverpool have done their homework on Ezri Konsa

“Tottenham, who are considering their options in central defence heading into 2026, are one of those who like the look of Konsa, as are Man City,” the report reads.

“City are looking at options in defence, both central and at full-back, and we are told the fact that Konsa can play right-back adds an extra element of appeal to the Citizens.

“Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have watched him at various points in the last 12 months.

“There is some interest abroad as well, with Italian giants Inter Milan and Napoli watching Konsa, along with RB Leipzig.”

It’s been speculated that Villa may have to sell one star next summer in order to stay in agreement with PSR regulations.

While Morgan Rogers has also been linked as a potential Liverpool transfer, the club’s need for a centre-back could mean Konsa trumps his England teammate in the Liverpool pecking order.
