Liverpool have announced a landmark commitment to provide British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters at each home match for the men’s and women’s teams until the end of the season.

Prior to the match against West Ham in the Premier League, fans at Anfield signed the club’s anthem to show their support for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. Former Reds boss Sir Kenny Dalglish also featured on the video in a touching moment that went viral on social media.

Supporters praised the powerful moment online and it marked the start of a long-term pledge. The reigning Premier League champions have now taken action to ensure Deaf and hard-of-hearing supporters no longer miss out on the full match-day experience.

From the Anfield stands to the concourse

The programme is being delivered in partnership with Danish beer brand and Liverpool’s longest-standing sponsor, Carlsberg. The British Deaf Association is also playing an active role in the project.

Beyond the pitch, the initiative will spread to local hospitality venues. BSL training will be provided for staff at both Anfield and St Helens Stadium, where the women play. Alongside this, staff at fan bars and pubs across the world will also receive training.

In addition, select teams at 16 Greene King pubs across Merseyside will receive basic training. This involves the sign for commonly used words such as: ‘pint’, ‘beer’, ‘wine’ and ‘are you paying with card?’

The commitment reflects a broader aim to improve accessibility in every aspect of a Liverpool matchday experience. From the stands to the concourse, the scheme ensures all fans feel that they belong.
