Liverpool’s midfield plans remain one of the biggest talking points of the summer, yet one name continues to hover in the background without attracting the same attention as Adam Wharton or João Gomes. During the latest edition of Media Matters on Anfield Index, Eddie Gibbs and Lewis Steele discussed Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi, and while neither suggested Liverpool are actively pursuing a deal, the conversation left open the possibility that the Reds could yet revisit their interest.
With Manchester City now appearing to lead the race, Liverpool’s silence has become almost as intriguing as the transfer speculation itself.
The discussion moved onto Bouaddi after Gibbs asked whether Manchester City now had a clear path to signing the highly rated Lille midfielder.
Gibbs noted that Liverpool had previously been linked with the youngster before his valuation accelerated dramatically following the World Cup.
Lewis Steele acknowledged that City’s position looks increasingly strong.
“It does seem like City are in the box seat for that one now.”
That alone would normally suggest Liverpool have moved on. However, Steele stopped well short of calling the race over.
“But, you know, there was loads of clubs interested earlier in the window. So you never know.”
Those few words underline how quickly transfer situations can evolve, particularly when elite young talent is involved.

Perhaps the most interesting part of Steele’s assessment came when discussing Liverpool’s current lack of activity.
“It seems a bit quieter on the Liverpool front these days than it was maybe a few weeks ago.”
That is hardly confirmation of renewed interest, but equally it is not confirmation that Liverpool have abandoned the player either.
Throughout the podcast, Steele repeatedly described Liverpool’s transfer strategy as patient and measured, often preferring to work discreetly before making decisive moves.
That wider context matters when assessing Bouaddi’s situation.
There is no suggestion that Liverpool are preparing an imminent bid, yet there is also nothing to indicate the club have publicly ruled themselves out.
The wider conversation repeatedly returned to Liverpool’s need to strengthen in midfield.
Steele made his position clear earlier in the show.
“I do just think that Liverpool need to go all out to strengthen that position.”
That naturally keeps players such as Bouaddi relevant, even if Manchester City currently appear to have the advantage.

Liverpool have already watched several midfield options this year, with João Gomes completing a move elsewhere and Adam Wharton remaining the subject of quiet speculation. Bouaddi belongs in that wider group of highly regarded midfielders Liverpool have monitored as they reshape the squad under Andoni Iraola.
For now, the strongest evidence points towards Manchester City leading the chase. Steele’s description of City being “in the box seat” reflects that reality.
However, he also reminded listeners that transfer windows rarely follow a straight line.
“You never know.”
It was a simple remark, yet one that neatly summed up Liverpool’s position. The Reds may currently be quiet, but until their midfield recruitment is complete, the possibility of a surprise move for Lille’s outstanding young midfielder cannot be completely dismissed based on the discussion in Media Matters.
