Record signing a doubt for trip to west London with Jeremie Frimpong also now sidelined

Alexander Isak is a doubt as Liverpool travel to face Brentford in the Premier League this weekend.

The British record signing recently started a game for the second time in four days against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League, having built up his fitness gradually after completing a blockbuster £125million move from Newcastle on transfer deadline day.

Isak played alongside fellow summer striker signing Hugo Ekitike for the first time in Wednesday’s 5-1 rout at Deutsche Bank Park, but was withdrawn at half-time.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot subsequently revealed that the Swedish international had suffered a groin injury as he “hoped for the best” and again bemoaned the fact that he had not had a proper pre-season and was not playing for Newcastle before moving to Anfield.

The Dutchman provided a further update on Isak’s fitness when he addressed the media on Friday ahead of Saturday night’s trip to Brentford, with the 26-year-old “a question mark” to feature in west London.

“Alex, not too bad. Question mark for the weekend, so let’s see where he is,” Slot said.

If Isak is unable to play, then Ekitike will surely lead the attack at the Gtech Community Stadium as Liverpool seek to rebuild some momentum after their big win in Frankfurt halted a damaging run of four successive losses across all competitions, with the out-of-form Mohamed Salah vying to return after being dropped to the bench in midweek and playing only 16 minutes as a substitute.

Slot is also hoping that Ryan Gravenberch can feature on Saturday after missing the trip to Germany altogether with an ankle injury that forced him off in the second half of last weekend’s shock 2-1 home defeat by Manchester United.

“He didn't travel with us [to Frankfurt], so today we are in again,” Slot said on his compatriot. “Yesterday we were in as well but we had a day to travel. Let's see where he is today.”

Gravenberch’s regular midfield partner Alexis Mac Allister played the majority of the United game sporting protective headgear after an early blow, but featured off the bench without it in Frankfurt and should come back into Slot’s starting XI on Saturday night, possibly partnered by Curtis Jones or a deeper Dominik Szoboszlai, if Gravenberch isn’t ready.

Giorgi Mamardashvili will continue to deputise in goal in the absence of Alisson Becker, who remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Sidelined: Jeremie Frimpong will miss a number of weeks for Liverpool with a hamstring injury

“Alisson is not in the squad tomorrow,” Slot said. “That's also going to take a little bit longer.”

Jeremie Frimpong has been ruled out for a number of weeks after hobbling off with his own hamstring issue in Frankfurt, meaning Conor Bradley should start at right-back, while Andy Robertson could make it back-to-back appearances on the left amid Milos Kerkez’s struggles.

“Jeremie is not in a good place,” Slot said. “What I mean with that is he is definitely not going to play tomorrow or next week. [A] hamstring injury so that's going to take a while.”

Wataru Endo returned from a knock on Wednesday to take a seat on the bench, with Giovanni Leoni the only other known absentee for Liverpool at present as he recovers from surgery on a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

£116m arrival Florian Wirtz will hope to keep his place in the team and spark his quiet Liverpool career so far into life.

Predicted Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1): Mamardashvili; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Jones; Salah, Szoboszlai, Gakpo; Ekitike

Injured: Frimpong, Alisson, Leoni

Doubts: Isak, Gravenberch
