Arne Slot has received injury boosts from two key players, but one remains out
Liverpool should have Ryan Gravenberch available to take on Manchester United this weekend, with Ibrahima Konate also expected to be involved.
A hamstring complaint meant Dutch midfielder Gravenberch was substituted at half-time of his country’s win over Finland last weekend as a precaution, while French defender Konate - one of just three senior centre-backs at Arne Slot’s disposal - was forced off in the 2-1 loss to Chelsea two weeks ago.
He subsequently left his national team camp early as he nursed a thigh problem.
Slot revealed on Friday that Gravenberch is “completely fit” while Konate was “expected to train” that day, suggesting both players should be in contention to start against United on Sunday.
It is a huge boost for the Reds, whose three straight defeats ahead of the October international break allowed Arsenal to leapfrog them to the top of the Premier League.
The Merseysiders will, however, be without Alisson for at least “this weekend and next week,” Slot added, with the Brazilian yet to return to training as he rehabilitates his own hamstring injury.
That means Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper will miss the midweek trip to Eintracht Frankfurt and most likely next Saturday’s visit to Brentford, on top of this weekend’s clash with United.
Giorgi Mamardashvili will therefore continue to deputise after making his Premier League debut before the break.
Elsewhere in the backline, Milos Kerkez will be hopeful of keeping his spot at left-back in light of a few tired appearances by Andy Robertson, but the bigger question will be who Slot chooses on the opposite side.
Jeremie Frimpong arrived for big money this summer but only has one Premier League start to his name, with Conor Bradley and even Dominik Szoboszlai often preferred at right-back.
However, the Dutchman enjoyed a restful international break and could be given a chance to start afresh, allowing Szoboszlai to move back into midfield alongside Gravenberch.
Florian Wirtz should start in the middle of the attacking midfield trio, meaning Alexis Mac Allister could miss out, with Mohamed Salah a shoe-in on the right wing.
Salah has had an uncharacteristically slow start to the season, but did score twice for his country over the international break. He boasts more goal involvements against United - 13 goals and six assists in 15 appearances - than any other player in Premier League history.
Cody Gakpo, meanwhile, was just involved in four goals for the Netherlands and may feel hard done by if he is benched on Sunday after scoring Liverpool’s only goal against Chelsea last time out.
Still, this could be a good chance for Slot to continue experimenting with a frontline that includes both Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak, so the former may take Gakpo’s place on the left wing from the start.
But if Ekitike starts up front and Isak drops out of the XI, Gakpo should keep his place.
Liverpool predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Mamardashvili; Frimpong, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Szoboszlai, Gravenberch; Salah, Wirtz, Ekitike; Isak
Injured: Alisson, Leoni, Endo
