GOAL’s annual NXGN list, which highlights the top teenage footballers worldwide, has become a benchmark for identifying these rising stars. In its 2025 edition, Liverpool’s own Rio Ngumoha has been honoured, securing the 42nd spot among the 50 prodigious talents featured.
Born on 29 August 2008, in Newham, London, Ngumoha began his footballing journey with Chelsea’s academy at the tender age of eight. Over eight years, he ascended through the ranks, even making appearances for the U21s as a 15-year-old. However, in a move that surprised many, Ngumoha transitioned to Liverpool in September 2024, a decision that reportedly left Chelsea “furious” at losing what they considered a “generational talent.”
Ngumoha’s impact at Liverpool was immediate. On 11 January 2025, he etched his name into the club’s history books by becoming the youngest player to start a first-team match. At 16 years and 135 days old, he featured in the FA Cup tie against Accrington Stanley, contributing to a 4-0 victory. Manager Arne Slot lauded the youngster’s performance, particularly his prowess in one-on-one situations, stating, “He did well… He is good in one-v-one situations.”
The NXGN 2025 list is a testament to Ngumoha’s burgeoning reputation. Sharing the spotlight with talents like Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, who clinched the top spot, and Chelsea’s Estevao Willian, ranked second, Ngumoha’s inclusion underscores his potential. His performances for Liverpool’s youth teams have not gone unnoticed, with GOAL noting his rapid ascent and the likelihood of more first-team opportunities on the horizon.
Ngumoha’s talents have also been recognised on the international stage. He has represented England at various youth levels, including the U15s, U16s, and currently the U17s. His recent participation with the England U17s in a European Championship qualifier against Israel further highlights his growing stature.

Rio Ngumoha’s journey from Chelsea’s academy to making history with Liverpool exemplifies the dynamic nature of football development. His inclusion in the NXGN 2025 list serves as both recognition of his achievements and a precursor to a potentially illustrious career ahead. As he continues to develop under the guidance of Liverpool’s coaching staff, fans and pundits alike will be keenly watching his progression.
The inclusion of Rio Ngumoha in the NXGN 2025 list is a source of immense pride and optimism. His seamless transition from Chelsea’s academy to our ranks underscores the club’s commitment to nurturing young talent. Ngumoha’s historic debut against Accrington Stanley not only showcased his individual brilliance but also highlighted the club’s philosophy of integrating youth into the first team.
Manager Arne Slot’s decision to entrust a 16-year-old with starting responsibilities speaks volumes about Ngumoha’s potential and the faith the coaching staff has in him. His ability to take on defenders and his composure on the ball are reminiscent of some of the club’s legendary wingers.
However, it’s essential to manage expectations. While his early performances are promising, the journey to stardom is fraught with challenges. The club must ensure that Ngumoha receives the right guidance, both on and off the pitch, to harness his potential fully.
