Things are going well at FC Bayern in sporting terms – but behind the scenes there are signs of an explosive development. Sporting director Max Eberl, who has provided important impetus with transfers such as Michael Olise or the signing of Vincent Kompany, appears to be increasingly losing influence internally
It was reported back in March that a contract extension beyond 2027 is anything but certain, with media reports putting the odds at 50:50 – and the latest developments suggest that this trend is worsening rather than improving, as reported by BILD
The kicker also reports that things are bubbling at Säbener Straße, with the relationship between Eber and sporting director Christoph Freund in particular being strained, according to the kicker
Eberl’s dwindling power is particularly evident when it comes to internal personnel issues. The 52-year-old’s desired solutions could not be implemented recently. For example, his close confidant Nils Schmadtke did not receive the long-term extension Eberl was looking for, but only a contract for 1.5 years – i.e. exactly until the end of Eberl’s current employment contract
The sporting director was also apparently unable to get his way in other cases. Markus Weinzierl is not to receive a new contract, although Eberl is said to have campaigned for this. These decisions are seen internally as clear indications that his influence is not unlimited

At the same time, another area of the club is becoming increasingly important: the campus. FC Bayern’s work with young talent is increasingly becoming a strategic pillar – both in sporting and economic terms
This area is being strengthened in a targeted manner with personnel changes and structural adjustments. Christoph Freund is to take on more responsibility, particularly in the youth sector. In addition, a new head of the NLZ, Michael Wiesinger, is being installed, while other positions are being created or adjusted
This development is no coincidence: according to BILD, Uli Hoeneß is behind the new course and is said to have pushed for greater integration of the club’s own talents early on. His success proves him right: under Vincent Kompany, eight young players have already made their professional debut this season – an exceptional figure
This creates a complicated situation for Eberl: although the sporting results are good and his transfers are paying off, the balance of power within the club seems to be shifting
While the campus strategy is gaining more and more support at management level, the sporting director is clearly losing influence over key decisions – a development that makes his future at the record champions increasingly uncertain
At FC Bayern, it’s not just about titles – it’s also about power structures, and this is where Eberl is currently facing his biggest challenge.
