Lazio president Claudio Lotito claimed ‘mercenaries’ are not welcome at his club as he commented on Mason Greenwood’s collapsed deal, after the 21-year-old joined Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille this summer after holding lengthy talks with the Biancocelesti.

Greenwood joined the French side from Manchester United after a one-season loan at Getafe and took Ligue 1 by storm as he scored five goals in seven league matches under the former Brighton coach, contributing to Marseille’s exciting start to the season.

Lazio were reportedly among the most interested clubs last summer, but the Biancocelesti got irritated when the English forward kept his pursuers waiting too long and Lotito insisted he’s not a ‘regret’ despite proving in great form, as he only wants players who are willing to play for his club.

Lotito on Greenwood: ‘Who doesn’t accept to join Lazio is not a regret’

“Greenwood isn’t a regret at all, someone who doesn’t accept to join Lazio can’t be a regret,” he told reporters outside Roma’s Luiss University, as quoted by TMW.

“He’s good for Marseille, he made a choice and that’s fine. We don’t accept mercenaries, we only want who chooses Lazio. We have enough of mercenaries.”

With five goals, Greenwood is currently Ligue 1 second-best top scorer behind Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola, as Marseille sit third having racked up 14 points from seven games.
