Lazio called off Alessio Romagnoli’s proposed move to Al-Sadd after a weekend twist, insisting the defender is not for sale.

"It was a carefully weighed decision. Lazio assessed all the economic, technical and environmental factors and chose not to weaken the squad." He told RomaToday.

Fans criticised January business after Matteo Guendouzi and Taty Castellanos left, replaced by Petar Ratkov and Kenneth Taylor. Romagnoli requested an exit following an offer from Roberto Mancini’s Al-Sadd and bade farewell at the Via del Mare on Saturday. On Sunday Lazio declared he would stay.

"Alessio is a professional under contract and a reference point for this team. The club felt that, at this moment, his staying was fundamental for the group."

"A clash? No. There is a dialogue, which is something different. Lazio listens to the coach and then decides, taking responsibility for our choices."

"Sometimes it’s done by preserving sporting competitiveness."

Lotito also confirmed the signings of Atalanta attacker Daniel Maldini and Reggiana goalkeeper Edoardo Motta, to be announced in the coming hours.
