Joe O’Brien Whitmarsh is emerging as a low-profile Southampton prospect who could edge into the first-team picture after an encouraging pre-season. According to Sainstmarching.com, head coach Tonda Eckert has not ruled out adding more youth to his squads once the real action begins.

After the Saints’ final run-out in Germany, Eckert said Nick Oyekunle and Romeo Akachukwu had stood out with hungry performances and that a discussion is needed about senior involvement. Competition is fierce in midfield, with Downes, Caspar Jander and Shea Charles forming a strong Championship trio, so any early minutes may be sporadic. Another loan could suit after a positive spell with Accrington Stanley, though the odd Championship outing cannot be ruled out as Eckert rotates in pursuit of promotion.

Eckert was willing to throw Cameron Bragg into the deep end last season, which suggests a pathway remains for promising midfielders.
