Lucas Stassin’s wages were almost halved after Saint-Étienne’s relegation, a hit that helps explain his flat first half of the season.

According to L'Équipe, the 21-year-old Belgian joined for €10 million on a four-year deal, plus an option, with a first-season salary of €58,000 gross per month. The club then went straight back down and a Ligue 2 clause cut his pay by about half, a reduction above the 20% in article 761 but valid because he accepted it.

After eleven goals and one assist in 16 matches to open 2025, the collective failure still stung. Several foreign clubs offered lucrative moves last summer but he was kept at Saint-Étienne, where his wage fell to €28,000. He changed agent in the autumn and went 15 games without scoring.

Since Philippe Montanier arrived in February he has been decisive again, with four goals and four assists in the last six rounds. The upturn brought a first senior Belgium call-up in late March. Promotion could partly offset losses, with performance bonuses creating a salary delta of about 40%.

Saint-Étienne’s pay scale is led by Le Cardinal on €40,000, ahead of Davitachvili on €38,000. Appiah, Cardona, Ferreira and Lamba are on €35,000, with Bernauer, Tardieu, Larsonneur and Nadé on €30,000. The coach earns €30,000 and the club average is €32,000, four times the Ligue 2 average of €8,000.

Goalkeeper and captain Gautier Larsonneur, 29, would hit €120,000 a month in Ligue 1, up from €30,000 in L2, under a clause in the two-year extension he signed in September that runs to 30 June 2028.
