Luciano Vulcano has taken his first job since leaving Sunderland, becoming AC Monza’s youth team head coach.

According to Sunderland Echo, he joined Régis Le Bris as assistant last summer and left by mutual consent after Le Bris said the fit within the coaching structure was not right.

Monza will compete again in Serie A next season after promotion, and the role gives Vulcano his first taste of head coaching. The Italian also wants to become a senior head coach in time.

Earlier this week he wrote on social media that his spell at Sunderland was unforgettable, thanked the club, and said he hopes to return to work in the country and league one day.

Sunderland initially chose not to replace him, then appointed former Southampton and Portugal centre back José Fonte to the coaching staff. He starts on Monday before the club’s pre-season tour of the US, his first coaching role since retiring.

Director of football Florent Ghisolfi said Fonte brings top-level experience, energy and leadership to a staff already performing strongly under Le Bris, and that those qualities should add value as the club pushes forward in the Premier League and in Europe. He will work alongside Michael Proctor, Alessandro Barcherini, set pieces coach James Brayne, goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler and chief analyst Isidre Ramón Madir.
