Lucien Muller, former Real Madrid and Barcelona midfielder and former Castellón coach, died on Tuesday aged 91.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, he was born in Bischwiller on 3 September 1934. With Stade Reims he won the French league in 1960 and 1962.
Before retiring as a player, he had three-year spells at Real Madrid and Barcelona. He won La Liga in 1963, 1964 and 1965 with Madrid, then the 1966 Fairs Cup and the 1968 Copa with Barcelona.
He ended his playing days back at Reims, then moved into management. He began with Castellón for four seasons from 1970 to 1974, later taking charge of Burgos, Zaragoza, Barcelona and Mallorca. Outside Spain he managed Monaco for three seasons, winning the French Cup in 1985, and returned to finish at Castellón in 1992.
His imprint at Castellón was profound across two spells, 1970 to 1974 and 1991 to 1992. He is the club’s most-used coach with 174 matches, delivering promotion to Primera División in 1972, a fifth-place finish and a Copa del Generalísimo final in 1973.
Local historians called him calm and courteous, crediting him with high-quality football. The Fondo 1922 supporters said his legacy endures as the architect of the club’s finest era. Miguel Ángel Portugal recalled Muller handing him his Burgos debut aged 19 in 1975.
