Grêmio began the Brasileirão with a 2-1 defeat to Fluminense at the Maracanã, and head coach Luís Castro received the lowest post-match rating.

According to Globo.com, goalkeeper Weverton was not blamed for either goal and made important stops, while Wagner Leonardo offered the most security at the back. Carlos Vinícius earned the highest mark after scoring, with Arthur Melo the main organiser in midfield.

Fluminense led when Marcos Rocha failed in a challenge on John Kennedy, who then set up Nonato. Gustavo Martins was also criticised for allowing Kennedy to turn on that move, the hosts later doubling their lead before Vinícius pulled one back from Martins’ headed assist after a Pavón cross began the attack.

Martins missed a late chance from close range. João Pedro grafted up and down his flank, and Marlon mixed sound defending with erratic distribution.

Dodi was booked and offered little thrust, Willian and Edenílson struggled to influence the game, and Edenílson missed when he did break into the box. Tetê beat men too far from goal, Enamorado was largely subdued, and Amuzu found scant joy against Samuel Xavier and Canobbio.

Pavón unsettled the home defence, also threading a pass into André Henrique in the area. Castro’s choice of three holding midfielders still left spaces, particularly before the break, and his main changes arrived at 2-0 down, the response proving insufficient.
