Luis Díaz’s goal for Bayern in their 2-2 draw away at Union Berlin in November has been named the Goal of the Year for 2025 in Germany by TV show Sportschau. It’s the second year in a row the award has come to Munich, after Harry Kane took the 2024 crown.

Díaz’s finish highlighted both his mentality and ability on the ball. Chasing a Josip Stanišić pass that looked on its way out of play, the Colombian slid to keep the ball in, spun past Janik Haberer, ran along the byline and then bent his shot over Frederik Rønnow into the far top corner from a seemingly impossible angle.

Max Eberl, Bayern board member for sport: “We’re very proud that Luis has been recognised with the Goal of the Year. Goals are ultimately what it’s all about in football, and we’re all particularly delighted by great goals. Lucho didn’t just produce a spectacular one here. It’s a work of art and shows his extraordinary commitment and passion when he plays football. Luis is a real boost for Bayern and the entire Bundesliga. Congratulations for this sumptuous goal. Fans voted for Harry Kane last year and now Lucho. Goals of the Year are slowly becoming a Bayern speciality.”

Díaz himself said, “Thank you very much for the award. When I watch the goal, I can’t quite believe I scored it. I just thought to shoot as quickly as possible so we could score a goal. It was incredible. The award means a lot to me. I’ve not been in the Bundesliga for long, but I’ve been able to find my feet quickly, thanks to a great team, a great family and also a very good coach. It’s then really easy to feel at home. Thank you for the award. I hope there’s more goals to come. That’s the most important thing for me as a forward, being able to help the team like that with hard work.”

Prior to Díaz and Kane, previous Bayern players to win Sportschau’s annual award, which has been presented since 1971, were Gerd Müller (1976), Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (1980), Jürgen Wegmann (1988), Klaus Augenthaler (1989), Lothar Matthäus (1992), Jean-Pierre Papin (1995) and Giovane Élber (1999).
