Luis Enrique has made it clear where he stands on his future at Paris Saint-Germain, amidst rumours that Manchester United view him as a candidate for the permanent head coach position.

Permanent manager hunt

Having dismissed Ruben Amorim in December last year after 14 months in charge, United brought in Michael Carrick to serve as caretaker boss until the end of the season.

When Carrick was initially appointed, the club’s stated plan was to give him the remainder of the season before making a permanent appointment in the summer.

However, Carrick’s storybook beginning has sparked debate over whether he should be in contention to be given the job permanently. Carrick has taken charge of four Premier League games, winning all four. Within an extremely short period, he has implemented an assertive and offensive-minded approach that opposition defences have struggled to contain.

Carrick’s winning run includes victories over Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

However, ex-United star Gary Neville recently revealed that a club insider told him that, as it stands, United are proceeding with plans to hire someone else.

Some of the managers thought to be vying for the Old Trafford hot seat are Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola, Enzo Maresca, Gareth Southgate, Eddie Howe, Carlo Ancelotti and of course, Enrique.

Enrique’s stance

Widely considered one of the best tacticians in football, Enrique boasts a stellar record from managing Barcelona, Spain and currently, PSG.

While at Barcelona between 2014 and 2017, he guided the club to two La Liga triumphs, a Champions League title, the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. He has won Ligue 1 twice with PSG and attained a first-ever Champions League trophy for the Parisians last season.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Enrique is a “primary target” for INEOS amid his uncertain future at PSG. Despite guiding the club to a historic treble last season, Enrique’s contract with the Ligue 1 giants expires next year.

Last week, The Star claimed that Enrique was closing in on agreeing terms with PSG and now, the 55-year-old has seemingly confirmed as much, dealing a fatal blow to United’s hopes of landing him.

Asked about his future, Enrique said [as quoted by Fabrizio Romano on X], “I am so happy at Paris Saint-Germain.”

“Ici c’est Paris!”

Given the complications in securing Enrique, United may already need to broaden their search.
