Luís Filipe Vieira has been convicted of publicly defaming João Malheiro, with the former Benfica president, Rui Costa’s predecessor, ordered to pay about 6,000 euros in damages.
The verdict was delivered on Tuesday, 19 May, following closing arguments held in April. Record writes that after that hearing the pair confronted each other again, with Vieira alleging Malheiro drank heavily and was at times unfit to be at Benfica because he was very drunk.
The sentence also requires Vieira to pay 50 euros to the state for 160 days.
The case arose from remarks Vieira made in 2022 that denigrated the Portuguese journalist’s public image.
In that interview, Vieira questioned Malheiro’s friendship with Eusébio and claimed he fuelled the legend’s addiction, saying he knew Eusébio was dependent on whisky.
