The Croatia international hopes to continue playing at a high level ahead of the 2026 World Cup
Real Madrid legend Luka Modric is close to agreeing a deal to join AC Milan, according to reports.
The 39-year-old will leave Real as a free agent following this summer’s Club World Cup. He had hoped to extend his 13-year stay at the club beyond this season, but contract negotiations proved unsuccessful.
Modric continued to play a key role for the club this season as they finished second in La Liga, appearing in all but three league matches.
AC Milan emerged as frontrunners for the midfielder’s signature this week, with new manager Massimiliano Allegri reportedly keen on his services.
Milan endured a dismal campaign this season, failing to qualify for Europe after finishing eighth in Serie A and crashing out of the Champions League in a league phase play-off.
The Rossonieri appointed Allegri as their new head coach earlier this week as they look to return to the pinnacle of the Italian game, and Spanish outlet Diario AS reports Modric was among the first players he requested.
The Croatian has been offered a one-year deal worth about £3million, with an option to extend for a second season.
Modric is in no rush to sign a new deal, though, with his main focus on lifting a 29th title with Real at the Club World Cup. Milan are happy to wait for his decision.
The offer provides him the opportunity to continue playing at a high level ahead of the 2026 World Cup, with some reports claiming he is hoping to retire after the tournament.
He penned a heartfelt letter to the Madrid faithful as he announced his retirement, writing: “The time has come. The time I never wanted to come, but that's football, and in life everything has a beginning and an end.
“Playing for Real Madrid changed my life as a footballer and as a person. I'm proud to have been part of one of the most successful eras of the best club in history. I’m leaving with a full heart.”
Modric made his final appearance at the Bernabeu in May, given a standing ovation as Los Blancos ended their La Liga campaign with a 2-0 win over Real Sociedad.
