Luka Modric produced a phenomenal performance in AC Milan’s 2-1 victory over Napoli in Serie A yesterday.
First-half goals from Christian Pulisic and Alexis Saelemakers put Milan in a strong position.
Despite Pervis Estupninan’s red card and Kevin De Bruyne pulling one back from the penalty spot, Milan saw out the game to collect three points and climb to the top of the table.
Despite Milan conceding a fair share of possession to the visitors, Modric was key to bringing stability to the midfield and controlling the game’s tempo.
The Croatian’s unmatched vision and passing accuracy caused a lot of trouble to Antonio Conte’s side in transitions.
He completed 53 passes – the most by a Milan player – with an accuracy of 91 percent, including 10 long balls and four passes into the final third.
The standout aspect was his relentless work rate and passion to take Milan beyond the finish line. He made seven recoveries, five interceptions, one tackle and won two ground duels.
Modric has now started in all five of Serie A games this season, clocking 449 minutes and bagging a goal and an assist.
The former Real Madrid star’s form will be crucial as Massimiliano Allegri’s side bids to mount a title challenge this season.
Pulisic continued his rich vein of form with a goal and assist, taking his tally to six goals and two assists in all competitions this season.
The United States forward is also Serie A’s top scorer with four goals.
Having navigated their first big hurdle of the season against Napoli, Milan will now gear up for another heavyweight clash against Juventus on Sunday.
