Luke Ayling has signed a new one-year contract at Middlesbrough, keeping the 34-year-old at the Championship club until 2027.

He left Leeds United in 2024 after eight years, initially joining Boro on loan in January before completing a permanent move in the summer. Ayling said he was delighted to extend his stay.

The right-back made 28 appearances in 2024-25 as the club finished 10th. He has already played 38 times this season, helping Middlesbrough sit second in the table with seven matches to play.

Since arriving from Elland Road, he has featured at right-back and centre-back and has captained on several occasions. His Boro tally now stands at 66 appearances.

Reflecting on the new deal, he acknowledged last season was not great for him and set out to prove he could still operate at this level, noting his enjoyment of this campaign. He also stressed the collective push to get the club back where it should be and the important role of the supporters in the run-in.
