Luke Shaw back to his best, says Phil Jones

Last season, it looked like Luke Shaw’s time at Manchester United was drawing to a close.

He had started a mere six times in all competitions under Ruben Amorim due to his numerous injury problems, and given his poor track record, it was expected that INEOS would cut him loose.

The last time the ex-Southampton ace has started over 20 games in a single campaign was back in the 22/23 season. In his 12 years at Old Trafford, the 30-year-old has played 30 games a season only twice.

But the Englishman looks a transformed figure this campaign, having started in all Premier League games this campaign.

Luke Shaw back to his best

He has transformed his game under the head coach, operating as a left centre-back in the absence of Lisandro Martinez.

And former United star Phil Jones feels his former teammate looks like he is back to his best, which is great news for the Portuguese tactician, who lacks an experienced left footed defender in his squad currently.

“He looks so much… so assured, comfortable. I always think Luke’s at his best when he sort of cruises through the game and, you know, against Forest at the weekend, I thought he defended terrifically in the box,” Jones told the Inside Carrington podcast.

“When the ball was in the box, he was tight; he made the blocks when he had to. He reads the game well, but when the ball gets transferred from one side to the other, he steps in so well, and he’s almost playing left-back at left-centre-back.

Luke Shaw could switch to the wingback position

“And the way he drives forward, he commits players, he’s really come into his own, he’s finding that position really well.”

Once the World Cup winner does return to the fold, Luke Shaw could be switched to the left wingback role, where Diogo Dalot has struggled to operate.

In an opinion poll started by The Peoples Person, fans feel the England international will be a great fit out wide while Martinez can reclaim his position on the left of the back three.

On current form, Luke Shaw does not deserve to be dropped, and Amorim should find a position for him in the first XI.
