Liverpool’s Boxing Day victory against Leicester City wasn’t just about securing three points; it highlighted broader concerns around contract negotiations for Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and others. These discussions were the focal point of Dave Davis and David Lynch’s conversation on Anfield Index’s Media Matters. Their insights paint a vivid picture of Liverpool’s challenges and opportunities heading into 2025.
The dialogue between Davis and Lynch was dominated by the question of whether Liverpool’s talismanic defender, Virgil van Dijk, will extend his stay at Anfield. Referring to Van Dijk’s post-match interview on Amazon Prime, Lynch noted, “When you’ve got a player who’s desperate to stay and a club that’s desperate to keep him… it’s only a matter of time.”
Van Dijk’s assertion, “I love the club, the club loves me,” offers reassurance. Yet, Lynch emphasised the importance of resolving his contract swiftly, stating, “These things take time, but when both parties are aligned, it’s inevitable.” For Liverpool fans, this optimism around Van Dijk’s future provides much-needed stability.
A pivotal concern for Liverpool is Mohamed Salah’s contract, with only six months remaining before he becomes eligible to sign pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs. As Davis wryly noted, “It’s 1st January, and Liverpool’s three big names can talk to other clubs.”
Lynch offered reassurance, stressing that Salah’s loyalty to Liverpool remains steadfast: “They want to stay. Clubs can throw money at them, but it doesn’t matter—they want to play for Liverpool.” Salah’s performance against Leicester, featuring another sublime goal, underscored his value. As Lynch put it, “He’s the best player in the world right now, consistently proving it in every game.”

Manager Arne Slot’s relaxed demeanour regarding contract situations also became a talking point. When asked about potential announcements, Slot remarked, “If something happens, it’s not for me to reveal. But constant talks are ongoing.” Lynch interpreted this calmness as a sign of confidence, asserting, “If Slot’s not worried, we shouldn’t be either.”
However, Slot’s composed approach doesn’t entirely mitigate concerns. Salah and Van Dijk remain instrumental to Liverpool’s success, and any delay in their contract resolutions risks unsettling fans and teammates alike.
As Davis and Lynch dissected the squad’s performance, they couldn’t ignore the off-pitch distractions that unresolved contracts might bring. Davis remarked, “It’s interesting how much fans read into body language and comments,” referencing Slot’s subtle smile when pressed on contract renewals.
These narratives underline the importance of decisive action from Liverpool’s board. While performances on the pitch remain dominant—Liverpool sit seven points clear at the top of the table—the contractual status of their marquee players is an unresolved subplot that demands attention.
