Lyon Winger Confirms Interest From Liverpool This Summer: Should Slot Go Back For Him? | OneFootball

In a recent interview with HBVL, Olympique Lyonnais winger Malick Fofana confirms interest from Liverpool this summer. When asked about interest from the Merseyside club and Chelsea, Fofana said,

“There was interest from those two clubs, but ultimately nothing concrete. I’ve considered a transfer, but now I think it’s more important that I play a lot, and that has to happen at Lyon. Because I still have some progress to make.”

Fofana’s Impressive Run Of Form In Ligue 1

Fofana enjoyed a good run of form at the French club in the previous campaign when he produced a series of impressive displays on the left side of their attack. The Belgian talent found the back of the net 11 times and secured six assists in 41 matches for Lyon last season across all competitions.

The 20-year-old deserves credit for averaging 1.76 shots per 90 minutes in Ligue 1. He kept 48.4% of his attempts on target. Fofana was even tidy when distributing the ball in the final third, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 77.4% in the French top tier (stats via fbref.com).

Should Liverpool Boss Arne Slot Go Back For Fofana?

Fofana is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and has got the vision to engineer a few inviting chances for his teammates in the final third. The Belgian talent can shoot the ball with venom from long range and can contribute by scoring and creating his fair share of goals up top.

Fofana mainly operates as a left-sided wide player but can also perform as a right-sided winger or as a centre-forward if required. However, there are some question marks over whether he can adapt to the physicality and high intensity of the Premier League if the Reds manage to secure his services next year.

We can expect Fofana to bring more firepower to Liverpool boss Arne Slot’s frontline in the long run. He is good enough to challenge for regular first-team football at Anfield in the coming years.

At 20, Fofana has the potential to be a future star in English football. Hence, Slot would be wise to go back for him this January or at the end of this campaign.
