Afonso Moreira made his comeback for Lyon in the Europa League round of 16 second leg against Celta Vigo, a 0-2 defeat.
Since arriving last summer, he has become a key figure for Paulo Fonseca’s side. He is the second most decisive player this season, with six goals and nine assists in 30 appearances.
The winger had been sidelined since mid-February with a hamstring problem. His return brought an uncommonly warm welcome from the home crowd.
"Right from the warm-up, we could feel the atmosphere; the crowd started chanting our names. If I’d been out of sight, I might have cried – it’s so overwhelming to receive that kind of love from the fans." "I’m really passionate about football and this club, and I think they can sense that – that’s probably why we have such a good connection." He was speaking to Le Progrès.
The 21-year-old, who came through Sporting CP, had earlier stepped up during Malick Fofana’s absence after the Belgian suffered a serious right ankle injury in October.
