Tottenham Hotspur overturned a first-leg deficit to book a spot in the Europa League quarter-finals after a 3-1 win against Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in the second leg of their last 16 tie.

Ange Postecoglou’s side were threading dangerous waters after falling to a 1-0 defeat in the Netherlands courtesy of a freak own-goal from Lucas Bergvall.

The Swedish teenager was given a chance to redeem himself, and he repaid the manager’s faith with a sublime performance on Thursday night.

Bergvall put in a more assured performance in front of the home crowd, winning all seven of his ground duels while chipping in with five interceptions and two tackles.

However, the spotlight was on Wilson Odobert, who bagged a brace on either side of a James Maddison strike to send Spurs to the Europa League last eight.

The 20-year-old has been plagued with injuries since joining Spurs but is finally living up to expectations as an exciting prospect.

His contribution to Spurs’ valiant fight-back earned him a 9/10 match rating and drew high praise from Maddison, who waxed lyrical about the Frenchman’s ‘fantastic’ display.

“Wilson Odobert will grab the headlines tonight, and rightly so,” Maddison said (via BBC Live).

“Two goals and he was a threat, and I thought he was absolutely fantastic. I’m going to go give him a big pat on the back.”

Tottenham’s crucial win reinforced the belief within the club that they could go all the way in the Europa League.

However, Maddison isn’t getting ahead of himself and has called on his teammates to remain focused in their pursuit of glory.

“I know what we’re capable of here, and we got the job done,” he said.

“We haven’t achieved anything yet. We’re in the quarter-final, and we kick on, and we look forward to it.”

Tottenham return to Premier League action against Fulham this weekend.

The North Londoners will be hoping to replicate their European performance when they visit Craven Cottage for a high-stakes London derby.
