After the disappointing 2-2 draw at Hamburger SV, FC Bayern are once again under fire, with former coach Felix Magath taking particular aim at Harry Kane – and questioning his role in the system
An unusual discussion has flared up at FC Bayern after their second Bundesliga game in a row without a win. Although they are still six points ahead of Borussia Dortmund, their recent performances have raised doubts. Against HSV, the Munich side were unusually vulnerable, losing control on several occasions and allowing themselves to be countered too often by a newly promoted team. For many observers, this is more than just a slip-up

Ex-Bayern coach Felix Magath has now come out with clear words. In an interview with RTL/ntv and sport.de, the former master coach criticised Harry Kane’s style of play in particular. Although the Englishman also scored in Hamburg, Magath considers his role to be problematic. „I would always use players according to their strengths. Harry Kane can score goals. He is praised by everyone and everyone cheers that he also runs around at the back. But that’s not his job,“ Magath made clear
In the 71-year-old’s view, it is of little benefit to the team if the goalscorer repeatedly drops deep into midfield or even into his own half. Kane would help the team much more if he concentrated on what he excels at: scoring goals. „He can clear as many balls as he wants at the back, but he helps the team more if he stands up front, waits, gets the ball and shoots it in,“ Magath continued
Reading between the lines, this criticism can also be seen as a dig at Vincent Kompany. The Bayern coach appreciates Kane’s team-oriented style of play and has praised it publicly on several occasions. Magath, on the other hand, sees this as a structural problem that deprives the attack of clarity and presence in the penalty area
In addition to Kane, Magath also expressed his general concern about the current developments at FC Bayern. In particular, he believes that the loud criticism of referee Harm Osmers after the HSV game is out of place. „This complaining from the players is unnecessary. That was not an unfair game,“ explained the former Bayern coach
Magath went even further and made it clear that FC Bayern had historically benefited more from refereeing decisions. „FC Bayern doesn’t need to complain that it gets too many whistles for or against it in the Bundesliga. The whistle is usually blown for Bayern. You look for mistakes everywhere but in yourself,“ was his verdict. For him, the key lies not in external circumstances, but in one’s own performance.
