Manchester United risk missing out on Maghnes Akliouche as Paris Saint-Germain ramp up their pursuit of the 24-year-old winger, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Akliouche has emerged as one of the most exciting talents in Ligue 1, delivering a series of superb displays for AS Monaco. Six goals and six assists in 31 appearances last season are a reasonable return, but they do not tell the whole story of a player whose technical quality is outstanding.

Capable of dizzying dribbling and incisive through balls, it is easy to see why the France international – currently on duty for his country at the World Cup – has caught the eye of United.

While a major revamp in midfield is the priority at Old Trafford this summer, INEOS are also searching for options to bolster Michael Carrick‘s forward line.

Though Akliouche is primarily a right-sided winger, he possesses the skillset to play on both flanks or centrally if needed. A six-foot frame and an excellent work rate out of possession mean the transition to English football should pose few problems. He could provide solutions for Carrick in midfield and attack.

Newcastle United have also been mentioned as suitors, with Monaco understood to be preparing for an exit as their prized asset is ready to test himself at a higher level.

However, the Red Devils and their Premier League rival now face the unenviable task of competing with Paris Saint-Germain for a player who hails from the French capital.

PSG ready to strike

Fabrizio Romano reveals the European champions, who successfully defended their title by beating Arsenal on penalties last month, are “leading the race” to sign Akliouche.

The Italian transfer expert claims Monaco are expecting offers to arrive imminently, while “talks and approaches” are intensifying amid widespread interest in the winger.

Interestingly, Romano means Paris Saint-Germain are ahead of two unidentified Premier League clubs, though it is a safe bet to guess who their identities could be.

It will be a tall order for United’s hierarchy to convince Akliouche to choose Old Trafford over the Parc des Princes, though INEOS have a history of trumping Paris Saint-Germain to top French talents before. Just ask Leny Yoro.
