Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush, according to a report.

Pep Guardiola's defending champions have been uncharacteristically underwhelming this season. After a fast start and a ruinous pre-Christmas spiral, City are slumped in sixth place, boasting fewer Premier League goals than mid-table Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur.

The club's Catalan coach made a public plea to the ownership for extensive reinforcements in January. Guardiola's call to arms was heard.

After extensive negotiations, City have finally thrashed out an "agreement in principle" with Eintracht Frankfurt for their in-form forward, according to RMC Sport's Fabrice Hawkins.

Just the night before this news broke, The Athletic claimed City had a bid rejected by Frankfurt, but insisted that a deal was still on the cards. The Bundesliga outfit have been very open in their lofty valuation of Marmoush, who has only been outscored by Bayern Munich talisman Harry Kane in Germany's top flight this season.

The Egypt international arrived in Frankfurt on a free transfer from Wolfsburg just 18 months ago, yet has been valued at around €80m (£67m) by his current employers.

City have already committed more than £60m on the imminent arrivals of young centre-backs Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov this month. Kyle Walker may very well be on his way out of the Etihad, but City are not expected to demand a fee for the 34-year-old.

Frankfurt are scheduled to face Borussia Dortmund on Friday evening. Marmoush started the club's first game back after the winter break, firing Frankfurt in front against Freiburg during a 4-1 win, but is expected to sit out the upcoming league game given the advanced nature of negotiations.
