Manchester City believe they have won the race to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson and believe they can secure his signature before the World Cup.

According to Nottingham Post, City chiefs are increasingly confident of a £65 million agreement after making the 23-year-old a priority target. They aim to finalise a deal as soon as the season ends, and Anderson is understood to favour a move to the Etihad.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham are also keen, but City want to act early to avoid any post-tournament price rise if Anderson shines. The clubs enjoy good boardroom relations after working on a James McAtee deal last summer.

A key question is whether Forest will sell before the finals in USA, Canada and Mexico, or hold out in hope of a bigger fee. That is not guaranteed, given finances across Europe and Anderson’s desire to join City.

Anderson has excelled since arriving from Newcastle in 2024, making 83 appearances and emerging as one of the Premier League’s standout young midfielders over the past 18 months. He broke into England’s squad in August for qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia, then debuted in a 2-0 win over Andorra the following month. He is likely to start for Thomas Tuchel this summer, and Tuchel will pair him with Declan Rice in the heart of midfield when the finals begin in June.
