Ruben Amorim’s men had little response for Pep Guardiola’s front three
Manchester City secured their first win in three games as they beat Manchester United 3-0 at the Etihad.
The hosts took the lead after 18 minutes as Phil Foden headed home after great work from Jeremy Doku, who burst into the area before crossing, at the second attempt, for the England international.
In a game of few chances, City proved ruthlessly efficient and added to their lead with two goals in the space of 15 minutes through Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian striker, who should have had a hat-trick after hitting the post having rounded United ‘keeper Altay Bayindir, latched onto Doku’s deft pass to double City’s lead after 53 minutes before racing clear and finishing confidently with just over 20 minutes to play as City coasted to victory.
This was a much-needed victory for Pep Guardiola, who came into the game having endured his worst start to a league season, and City, but yet another chastening afternoon for United, who continue to sink to new lows under Ruben Amorim.
Sam Tabuteau was at the Etihad for Standard Sport to rate the City players’ performances...
Gianluigi Donnarumma 7
There aren’t any more daunting occasions in which to make your debut than a Manchester Derby, but Donnarumma stood up to the task well. Commanded his box in testing weather conditions, and his handling was secure, when, again, the rain could have played its part. Produced a superb save from Bryan Mbeumo’s volley.
Abdukodir Khusanov 7
A confident display from the young defender, who was strong in the tackle up against Amad Diallo.
Ruben Dias 7
Used his body well to keep Benjamin Sesko quiet and rarely looked in any real danger against United’s toothless attack.
Josko Gvardiol 6
On his first start of the season, United should have looked to test Gvardiol, but the Croatian was calm and composed, hardly having to step out of second gear.
Rodri 6
A controlled performance from Rodri, who is easing his way back to full fitness. City will become another team entirely once he gets more minutes in his legs.
Nico O’Reilly 7
Helped keep City in the ascendancy with a battling performance. No player made more tackles than the 20-year-old, and he also contributed in possession, providing six passes into the final third. His tackle started the move that led to City’s second.
Bernardo Silva 7
Provided a lovely assist for Haaland’s second and probed with intent throughout, with his initial tackle opening up the opportunity from which he supplied Haaland.
Tijjani Reijnders 6
A tidy if unspectacular performance from Reijnders. Could have done better when found by Doku inside the area.
Phil Foden 8
A much-improved performance from Foden, who provided a welcome reminder of what he can bring for club and country. With the World Cup around the corner, Foden could do with more performances like this. His well-taken header opened the scoring for City, and he worked hard out of possession, making the most defensive contributions of any player on the pitch.
Jeremy Doku 9
Foden’s opening goal was all down to his lively, bursting run to the byline. Effected the game from both flanks, assisting Foden from the right before playing in Haaland from the left to double City’s lead. Everything good from City came through him.
Erling Haaland 9
Fresh from a free-scoring international break, in which he netted five times against Moldova, Haaland carried on his fine goalscoring form with two well-taken goals in the second-half. Dropped deep to link the play and get City pushing forward, and should really have completed his hat-trick after hitting the post with the goal gaping.
Subs:
Nico Gonzalez 6
Kept things ticking over in midfield as City wrapped up a comfortable victory.
Savinho 6
Will have a difficult task breaking into the first team with Doku and Foden playing as well as they did this afternoon.
Oscar Bobb 6
A talented player, but one who might have to look elsewhere in order to get minutes.
Nathan Ake N/A
Shored up a defence that was rarely threatened.
