Title rivals face down in decisive showdown at Etihad Stadium

Arsenal travel to Manchester City this afternoon in the biggest game of their season so far. The Gunners lead the Premier League title race by six points with six games to go this season. Pep Guardiola’s City have a game in hand on Mikel Arteta’s men, which they will play against Burnley next week. Today’s hosts could move to within three points of the league leaders with a victory today.

Guardiola and City know that anything less than a win will not be enough as they look to chase Arsenal down in the final knockings of a thrilling Premier League season. Guardiola has gone as far as saying that a defeat this afternoon would mean that the title race is over. The Gunners, however, are in patchy form, having won just once in their last five games.

Arteta’s side were unconvincing in their 0-0 draw with Sporting Lisbon last time out, and they suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat by Bournemouth in their most recent league outing to open the door for City. Stay up to date with all the latest from the Etihad Stadium with our live blog below, including expert insight from Matt Verri at the ground.

Guardiola makes title race prediction

Pep Guardiola has said the Premier League title race will be over if Manchester City lose to Arsenal.

Man City begin the weekend six points behind Arsenal, but, crucially perhaps, have played a game less than the league leaders.

With the trip to relegation-threatened Burnley being brought forward to next Wednesday due to their involvement in the FA Cup semi-final, City can move to the top of the table by winning the next two league games.

Though, if Arsenal avoid defeat they will remain in control of their own destiny with five games remaining after visiting the Etihad.

Speaking on Friday, Guardiola went one step further by declaring the title will be “over” if the Gunners leave the Etihad with all three points - for the first time since January 2015.

“Yes, obviously. If we lose, it is over,” the Spaniard told reporters. “The other two results, knowing that Arsenal didn't beat Bournemouth - we still have games to play.

“Six games is a lot and especially in our calendar. Everton away, Bournemouth away, Aston Villa the last game at home.

“Crystal Palace and Brentford. There are still many things to do."

Arteta makes Arsenal tactics vow

Mikel Arteta has declared Arsenal will go all-out to beat Manchester City today.

A win for City would mean they could go top of the table if they then beat Burnley on Wednesday night.

Arsenal would maintain their current advantage of six points at the summit with a draw, but Arteta dismissed the suggestion that his side would be happy with a point this weekend.

"I'm not going to spend one second talking about that," the Spaniard said on Friday.

"We prepare every game to win, that's why we are where we are and we're going to continue to do the same.

"We want to win the game. We are there to win the game. We haven't talked about that [a draw]. We need to win the game and we are preparing to win the game.

"No different to any stadium we have been to in the last five years. There's no change there."

Excuses have run out for Arsenal ahead of red-hot title showdown

“Beating Arsenal once is so difficult,” Pep Guardiola said last weekend, after Manchester City’s win over Chelsea. “Imagine beating them twice in a few weeks.”

With the season threatening to slip from Arsenal’s grasp, that does not currently feel like a particularly taxing test of imagination, writes Matt Verri.

Last month’s Carabao Cup final was billed as a defining moment in the season. One to establish Arsenal as a trophy-winning force and leave City counted out, or a chance for Guardiola’s side to land a counter-punch and have the Gunners swirling in self-doubt.

The latter has materialised. After that final defeat, the best-case scenario for Arsenal was that it could be compartmentalised and left at Wembley. Instead it is a shadow they cannot shake.

Losing to City last month could be explained as a one-off bad day, even if it came on such a big occasion. Southampton knocking Arsenal out of the FA Cup came with the caveat of a rotated Gunners side.

Forgiving explanations have now run out. Bournemouth’s deserved win on Saturday was disastrous for Arsenal. Any fear factor has gone.

Man City vs Arsenal prediction

With the Premier League title on the line, questions have been asked of Arsenal’s mental fortitude. This will be the greatest test yet of their constitution.

Recent defeats by Southampton and Bournemouth have plainly wreaked havoc on the team’s confidence, and this high-flying City will allow no room for error.

The Carabao Cup final ended in a 2-0 defeat for Arsenal. We expect this match to follow a similar script.

Man City to win, 2-0.

Early Arsenal team news

Mikel Arteta will make a late decision on several players.

Arsenal will be without Bukayo Saka, who has failed to recover from an Achilles injury in time to feature.

Noni Madueke is a doubt with the knee issue that forced him off in midweek against Sporting, with Arteta leaving it to the last minute to make a call.

Arsenal hope that Madueke will be available, though Arteta has indicated he would be willing to throw Max Dowman into the lion's den if required.

Martin Odegaard, Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori also still have to prove their fitness after injury problems of their own.Arteta could opt to bring Kai Havertz into his starting lineup to help Arsenal hold the ball and get up the pitch.

Eberechi Eze is likely to continue at No10, while Arteta must decide between Ben White or Cristhian Mosquera, who impressed on Wednesday night, at right-back. Mikel Merino remains out, along with Saka.

Early Man City team news

Manchester City have Nico O’Reilly fit for today’s title showdown, though Ruben Dias will miss out again.

O’Reilly was the match-winner as City saw off rivals Arsenal 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final last month, but had been a doubt for today’s Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium after going off with a hamstring injury after opening the scoring in the 3-0 win over Chelsea.

Dias missed that game in west London as he continues to nurse an ankle problem suffered in the Champions League last-16 second-leg defeat by Real Madrid that saw him also miss out on Wembley in addition to the FA Cup quarter-final demolition of Liverpool.

If O’Reilly is not ready to start against Arsenal, then Rayan Ait-Nouri would take his place at left-back - as he did off the bench against Chelsea.

Marc Guehi and Abdukodir Khusanov should continue as the centre-back pairing in the absence of Dias, with Matheus Nunes on the right of defence and Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal.

Bernardo Silva and Rodri have been impressing in midfield, with Rayan Cherki starring as the central figure in an attacking triumvirate alongside Antoine Semenyo and Jeremy Doku, supporting prolific striker Erling Haaland.
