Arsenal now only two points ahead in title race as they lose goal difference advantage
Manchester City brushed aside Crystal Palace 3-0 to keep themselves alive in the Premier League title race. Pep Guardiola’s side had to win their game in hand at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night to prevent leaders Arsenal from clinching their first championship for 22 years with a win at home to relegated Burnley next week. And they did just that, though made a sluggish start after Guardiola made six changes to the side that beat Brentford ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final against Chelsea, with the likes of Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki all named on the bench.
Jean-Philippe Mateta thought he had scored just two minutes in for a Palace team under Oliver Glasner that made four changes of their own with nothing to play for domestically and a Conference League final showdown with Rayo Vallecano coming up, with the visitors looking the most dangerous initially on the counter-attack despite City dominating possession. However, they fell behind after the half-hour mark when man of the match Phil Foden’s stunning backheel teed up Antoine Semenyo to fire beyond Dean Henderson.
Foden was the provider again for Omar Marmoush to double the lead before the interval, with City only growing in confidence thereafter as they later bettered Arsenal’s goal difference as Savinho wrapped up a commanding victory six minutes from time after a fine Cherki assist. Job done for Manchester City, who win their game in hand easily to cut Arsenal's Premier League title lead down to two points with two matches left to play for both.
City's goal difference is now one better than Arsenal's.
Arsenal cannot clinch the title at home to relegated Burnley on Monday night, but if they win that game then City have to then win at high-flying Bournemouth on Tuesday night to take the race to the final day, when Arsenal are at Crystal Palace and City host Aston Villa.
Palace stay down in 15th ahead of a trip to Brentford, with the Conference League final their only motivation during the end to Oliver Glasner’s reign.
First up for City before the south coast is the small matter of the FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday as they look to complete step two of a desired domestic treble.
Foden the star of the show, proving a point to Thomas Tuchel before England;’s World Cup squad selection next week.
