Manchester City do not often enter European nights needing to calculate. Usually, they control. This time, the equation is awkward. Pep Guardiola’s side require a win against Galatasaray to secure automatic qualification for the Champions League round of 16, an unusual position for a club who have made dominance feel routine.

Defeat to Bodo/Glimt last time out disrupted City’s league phase and left them sitting 11th in the standings, level on points with three teams inside the top eight but trailing on goal difference. It is not a crisis, but it is a reminder that margins remain unforgiving in this new format. City responded domestically with a 2-0 win over Wolves, a necessary correction, if not a definitive one.
Galatasaray arrive as reigning Turkish champions and leaders of the Super Lig, but Europe has been less accommodating. They sit 17th in the Champions League table with three wins, positioned well enough to believe progress is likely, yet still requiring a result to remove uncertainty. For both clubs, then, this is not about reputation but resolution.
City’s European campaign has contained control and contradiction. Performances have largely impressed, yet the table tells a more fragile story. Automatic progression matters not only for prestige but for calendar management, something Guardiola values deeply as domestic and continental demands collide.
Galatasaray’s outlook is different. They can approach the Etihad with ambition rather than anxiety, knowing defeat would not be fatal but victory could be transformative. The Turkish side will want all three points to secure a place in the play-offs and avoid relying on other results.
Kick-off is scheduled for 8pm GMT on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at the Etihad Stadium, with the match televised live in the UK on TNT Sports 6 from 6.30pm. Subscribers can also follow via the Discovery+ app and website.
Manchester City’s injury list remains stubborn. Josko Gvardiol, John Stones, Ruben Dias, Savinho and Mateo Kovacic are all absent, leaving Guardiola light in key areas. Nico Gonzalez is edging closer to a return, with optimism inside the club that his comeback is imminent.

Oscar Bobb remains unavailable after Guardiola confirmed the player has been pushing to leave this month, with Fulham among the interested clubs. Erling Haaland, rested against Wolves, is expected to return, a significant boost given the stakes.

Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi cannot be added to City’s Champions League squad until the knockout stages, further limiting options.

Galatasaray, by contrast, welcome back Victor Osimhen following his return from AFCON, although defender Metehan Baltaci is suspended and Gabriel Sara is expected to miss out through injury.

There is also a familiar subplot. Leroy Sane will face City for the third time since leaving, having recorded one draw and one defeat in previous meetings against his former club.
City’s recent form has wavered, but Europe has largely been kinder. The memory of Bodo/Glimt will linger, yet the response against Wolves suggested focus returning. With Haaland refreshed and motivated, Guardiola’s side should carry enough attacking threat to impose themselves.
Galatasaray are capable of resistance and moments of menace, but this feels like a night that suits City’s need for clarity. At home, with qualification on the line, they are expected to deliver.
Prediction: Man City to win, 3-1.
This will be the first competitive meeting between the sides and City’s first encounter with Turkish opposition since facing Fenerbahce in the European Cup in 1968.
