Everton 2 – 2 Liverpool – Premier League Man of the Match

Mohamed Salah

This game was embroiled in emotion and celebration as Goodison Park played host to its final-ever Merseyside Derby. Within a chaotic footballing spectacle, this occasion represented a game that is synonymous with the beautiful game and the local encounter was always going to be a roller coaster of a ride for both sets of fans, let alone the players on the pitch.

As David Moyes continues to turn around the fortunes of his beloved blues, Arne Slot strives to defy pre-season expectations and take a giant stride towards the first Premier League title. As adrenaline and passion engulfed the famous turf just across Stanley Park from neighbouring Anfield, the game was always going to require one or two special performances to create a winning opportunity for his respective team.

This game was more about three points and with the Reds looking to create a nine-point gap between themselves and second-placed Arsenal, it was up to Everton to attempt to halt Liverpool’s ascension and hinder the wishes of the men in red.

In the end, a 2-2 draw was tough on the visiting team, especially with Ibou appearing to be fouled in the build-up. Regardless of that poor moment from VAR, the two men that stood out the most in this game were Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton and the man of the match, Mohamed Salah. The first Liverpool goal was due to a brilliant Alexis Mac Allister goal, which came due to a tremendous Salah cross from wide.

When the Reds looked like they might fall under the physicality of the Toffees, it was the Egyptian King who was able to find his team’s second goal with a piercing hit from the angle. Regarding the seven point gap that has been created by this important draw, it must be seen as a good result in such hostile territory. Everton were ferocious and to take a point only adds to the brilliant total that is being built by Arne Slot.

Much of the post-match talk will revolve around the melee that erupted on the pitch at full time, however, nothing can be taken away from the wonderful two-goal contributions by Liverpool’s famous number eleven.

Next up Wolves, who travel to Anfield this weekend where Liverpool will look to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table.

Steven Smith’s Pre-match Prediction;
