Manchester United defender Anna Sandberg has returned to the Sweden national team ahead of their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Sandberg featured prominently for United yet again across the competitions the club participated in during the 2025/26 campaign.
She played 31 games across all competitions, contributing one goal and twice as many assists.
United started the WSL season strongly, but their momentum faded and they ultimately settled for a disappointing fourth-placed finish.
The Reds also had a strong start in the Champions League but they endured a limp exit at the hands of Bayern Munich in the quarter-final stage.
Sandberg suffered a knee injury in February, which ruled her out of action for around eight weeks. She sustained the issue during United’s 3-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League play-off first leg tie in Spain.
The injury also caused Sandberg to miss Sweden’s World Cup qualifiers with Italy and Serbia in March.
But she has made her return to the national team as Sweden prepare to face Denmark and Italy.
National team coach Tony Gustavsson said about the United defender, “It’s great to have Anna back, she has worked hard to get back after injury.”
Sandberg is not the only United player to be called up by Gustavsson, with teammates Hanna Lundkvist, Fridolina Rolfö and Julia Zigiotti Olme also present.
Victories over Denmark and Italy will secure Sweden a place in the 2027 World Cup. A loss against Denmark would force Sweden to settle for playoff games.
In the event of a draw against Denmark, Sweden would then need to beat Italy while Denmark slip up against Serbia in their final game for Sweden to finish first in the group.
