Senne Lammens is being packaged as the next big thing in European football.

The 23-year-old, 6’4 goalkeeper boasts strong shot-stopping ability, composure under pressure, and tidy distribution: traits that have earned him the nickname ‘Baby Courtois’.

Last season, he posted eye-catching numbers: stats that partly justified United pulling out all the stops to secure his signature.

At United, there is an acceptance that Lammens is not the finished product. He is still a rough diamond waiting to be polished.

But the belief remains: he could reach the heights of Courtois, who is arguably one of the finest goalkeepers Europe has produced.

United may have finally landed their next great goalie, the ultimate David de Gea successor, after a turbulent spell since the Spaniard’s 2023 exit.

Yet that narrative may be shifting, given an intriguing revelation by The Sun.

Top goalkeeper signing eyed

The UK publication claims:

“United have prioritised a major goalkeeper signing next year.”

As for why, they add:

“Ruben Amorim confirmed last week that United do not have an outright No.1 keeper following the £18.2million deadline day signing of Senne Lammens.”

And on who United might be targeting:

“AC Milan custodian Mike Maignan is out of contract next year and United recently dealt with his representatives, as Bryan Mbeumo is among their clients.”

INEOS goalie chase baffling

United’s pursuit of another top goalkeeper does not add up.

It leaves fans scratching their heads.

Why go all in for Lammens, only to immediately prioritise another marquee signing between the sticks?

It casts doubt over claims that the £18.2m summer arrival is genuinely viewed as United’s long-term number one.

Bringing in a top-tier goalkeeper would undoubtedly block Lammens’ pathway.

Perhaps Amorim is simply looking to upgrade on Altay Bayindir and wants a capable deputy for Lammens. That would make sense.

But whether someone like Maignan would accept a backup role is another matter entirely.

That said, this weekend could finally see Lammens make his United debut, having caught the eye in training since his arrival.
